Practicum in Course Design for ESL/EFL Teachers

X327.1 (3 semester units in Education)

(formerly Fundamentals of Course Design)

Building on prior coursework in linguistics, methodology, second-language acquisition, and cross-cultural communication, this course provides participants with project-based practical experience in the important components of curriculum design and creating a goal-oriented classroom. Embedded in the course are teaching techniques, lesson planning, materials and classroom management. Participants design an original curriculum for a unit or course.

For the duration of the course, you will spend a minimum of 90 minutes per week in a mentor teacher's classroom. Initially you will observe the teacher and students and participate in tutoring, small group work, and other activities as a student-teacher. In the final weeks of the course, you will teach lessons of your own design. This practicum portion of the course includes seminar discussions, as well as a lesson-planning workshop to assist student teachers in the preparation of lessons for the classroom.

Enrollment is restricted. Call (510) 642-1171 for enrollment information.

Prerequisite: Completion of all other coursework and acceptance of your application for candidacy to the TESL certificate program.
