X437 (2 semester units in Journalism)
A requirement in the Certificate Program in Technical Communication and the Professional Sequence in Technical CommunicationEditing technical material requires specialized skills. This course focuses on how to edit different types of technical documents for clarity, consistency, cohesiveness, and correctness. You learn to identify and correctly use specialized vocabulary and how to employ editing tools such as proofreader's marks, style sheets, style guides, and standard editorial reference material. You also understand how to distinguish and correct common problems such as inconsistency, ambiguity, and incorrect punctuation.
The course requires frequent editing assignments. It assumes proficiency in English and a working knowledge of English grammar. Students who may need a review of basic grammar should take Practical Grammar for Editors X445 before enrolling in this course.

PATRICIA EGAN, B.A., has worked in technical and financial communications since 1992. In her previous career, she worked in nonprofit fundraising for organizations including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York Botanical Garden, and New York City Partnership. She has managed complex projects in professional and technical communications, meeting critical deadlines for her clients in biotech, financial services, IT, telecommunications, and transportation. She served as a judge for the Touchstone 2002 Awards, Society for Technical Communication, Northern California Region. She is a member of the Society for Technical Communication, Council of Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication, and American Society for Information Science and Technology. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from UC Berkeley, with graduate work completed at New Jersey Institute of Technology.
