By providing opportunities for lifelong personal and professional growth, Extension acts as a catalyst for positive change in individual lives and in local, national, and global communities. Comprehensive Curricula Extension offers more than 1,000 courses per year in subjects ranging from art and design to business and management, electronic engineering, computer information systems, K-12 teacher training, photography, and writing. For an overview of the curricula offered by each of our core departments, see the section on Core Curricula. Courses are open to all interested adults, and there is no formal admission process for most programs. For more information about individual courses, browse or search the current catalog. For information on how to enroll, or to enroll online, visit www.unex.berkeley.edu/enroll. Course Development and Approval Extension's curricula are developed by an academic staff of continuing education specialists in consultation with organizations such as corporations, K-12 schools, international universities, and government agencies. Extension courses are designed to address current needs, respond to emerging trends, and incorporate the latest research, techniques, and practices. All courses offered for credit are reviewed and approved by UC Berkeley. Student Services Extension offers students a wide range of services, including official transcripts, discounts for members of the Cal Alumni Association, and visa coordination and health insurance for international students. Expert Instructors Extension instructors are drawn from the Berkeley campus and other educational institutions, as well as from business, industry, science, engineering, the arts, and the professions. As practitioners in their fields, these instructors bring wide-ranging experience and networking opportunities to Extension students. Convenient Locations Extension offers courses around the Bay Area, including Berkeley, San Francisco, and Redwood City. Maps, directions, and other location information are available at www.unex.berkeley.edu/loc. Courses are also delivered online and via customized training, which can be provided on site at client locations around the world. Online Learning UC Berkeley Extension's online courses allow students to work at their own pace, using message boards and chat rooms to communicate with instructors and fellow students. More than 115 courses are offered in a wide range of subject areas; many may be applied toward certificate programs. For some courses, credit may be transferable to college degree programs (at the discretion of the institution to which the student is applying). Online courses and instructors undergo the same rigorous approval process as all of Extension's academic offerings. Customized training programs are also available online. Concurrent Enrollment in UC Berkeley Campus Courses Extension students may enroll in selected UC Berkeley campus courses in the fall and spring semesters without committing to full- or part-time study, in order to earn additional units to complete a degree, or simply investigate new careers. More information is available. For Summer Sessions, please refer to summer.berkeley.edu. Public Events Throughout the year, Extension presents free and low-cost programs in locations around the Bay Area that examine contemporary issues, trends, and ideas. Recent topics have included nanotechnology, sustainable development, new findings on depression, and our annual forum on the American presidency. Community Outreach For more than a century, Extension has been one of the major vehicles for bringing the University's resources to the wider community. Our mission of public service is fulfilled by applying resources where they can have the greatest effect, as in the following examples:
Because Extension is completely self-supporting, it relies on contributions from individuals and organizations in the communities it serves. These contributions help Extension respond to changing educational needs while keeping course fees affordable, and to meet such key goals as
