CORE CURRICULA

UC Berkeley Extension courses are developed and administered by six academic departments: Art and Design; Behavioral and Biological Sciences and Math; Business, Technology, and Engineering; Education; Humanities; and International Programs. For information about individual course offerings, please see the course catalog.

Art and Design

This department is largely based out of our popular and attractive South of Market Center’s offices, studios, and classrooms, though classes may be offered at other locations as well. There are courses and programs in the subject areas of art history, art studio, graphic design, interior design, garden design, photography, and landscape architecture.

Behavioral and Biological Sciences and Mathematics

This department covers three key areas of study. UC Berkeley Extension’s behavioral and health science courses help professionals in the field get the continuing education units needed to meet both licensing and re-licensing requirements, while expanding or deepening their expertise in subjects from the treatment of mood disorders to alcohol and drug abuse to public health. Science courses cover cutting-edge topics in biotechnology and clinical trials, as well as a wide range of traditional science disciplines, from human anatomy to cancer biology to organic chemistry. Organized curricula help people prepare for application to medical school and other professional training programs in healthcare such as nursing and physical therapy. Statistics courses can satisfy M.B.A. and other prerequisites or serve as a refresher for standardized tests and related areas of study such as teaching or finance. You can take math courses in traditional classrooms, online, or through the self-paced program.

Business, Technology, and Engineering

Courses offered by this department span the subject areas of business, management, computer technology, information systems, electrical and civil engineering, and environmental management. They are for students who are planning to enter these professional fields as well as for professionals seeking to supplement their skills. In business, students can choose from project management, marketing, business communications, accounting, finance, and many other areas of study. Our computer technology and information systems classes include analysis and design and database management systems, as well as Microsoft development, open source systems, network operating systems, and programming languages. Electronic engineering courses focus on analog electronics, integrated circuit design, RF and wireless technology, digital signal processing, and more. Civil engineering and environmental management courses are designed to help professionals remain at the forefront of their fields, broaden technical expertise, and prepare for licensing exams. Area of study include construction management; structural, geotechnical, and earthquake engineering; HVAC; land-use planning; water and natural resource development; and more.

Education

The Department of Education offers a wide range of professional development courses and public service and training programs that prepare educators, prospective educators, parents, and the general public to understand and effectively meet the evolving needs of our world's diverse learners. Programs range from teacher credentialing to teaching English as a second language, and from adult and vocational education to college admissions advising.

Humanities

This department provides a wide array of courses for both personal and professional development. Languages, writing, editing, literature, philosophy, contemporary issues, wine studies, and more offer lifelong learners a cornucopia of Berkeley-quality choices.

International Programs

International Diploma Programs and Internships: Extension's
International Diploma Programs are designed for international students who have already earned an undergraduate degree. They combine in-depth study of particular business fields with hands-on application, providing students the practical business skills necessary to excel in the global economy. Designed to be completed in four months, the diploma programs include administration, finance, marketing, international business, and project management. After successfully completing a diploma program, students may apply for an internship in a San Francisco Bay Area company.

Evening Certificate Programs for International Students: International students who meet English language requirements may enroll in one of eight evening certificate programs conducted by UC Berkeley Extension. Held in locations around the Bay Area, these programs require eight months to three years to complete.

UC Berkeley Extension Online

Our award-winning
online courses are developed and administered by this academic unit. Online course developers work closely with academic staff through the institution to create Berkeley-quality content that is tailored to the specific nature of online teaching and learning. "Independent Learning" classes, also created by this department, use either Web-based or print-based materials to teach content and build student-teacher relationships.
